Regulations for Foreign-Plated Vehicles in Baja California Sur
Good news for U.S. drivers: you do not need a Temporary Import Permit (TIP) to drive your U.S.-plated car anywhere on the Baja California peninsula, from Tijuana all the way to Los Cabos. You only need a TIP if you take the ferry or drive to mainland Mexico. Below is what applies to visitors, part-time owners and residents, and the one rule that catches many new homeowners off guard.

The entire Baja California peninsula (the states of Baja California and Baja California Sur) is treated as a free zone for foreign-plated vehicles. If you cross at Tijuana, Tecate, Mexicali or another Baja border crossing and stay on the peninsula, you can drive to Cabo San Lucas or San José del Cabo without a TIP.
This free zone does not cover the rest of Mexico. If you plan to put your car on the ferry from La Paz or Santa Rosalía to the mainland, or drive into Sonora or beyond, you need a TIP first.

💡 Tip for new homeowners: Many buyers who move to Cabo full time eventually become permanent residents. Permanent residents do not qualify for a TIP, so a U.S.-plated car can't leave the peninsula. If you are planning residency, decide early whether you'll keep your U.S. car, import it, or buy locally.
Your U.S. auto policy is generally not valid in Mexico. You need a Mexican liability policy from a company licensed in Mexico, even inside the free zone. Buy it before you cross. In an accident, not having Mexican insurance can mean your car is held and you are detained until damages are settled.
